ECOLOGICAL OVERVIEW
 

As the Geopark is located at the middle Altai Mountain Range, it has a completely developed mountain vegetation vertical belt. The various vegetation types are divided into mountainous coniferous forest, mountainous deciduous broad-leaved forest, meadow, alpine vegetation, hygrophilous vegetation, mire vegetation, shrub vegetation. Each vegetation type consists of various plant flora. For example, Siberian larch flora, Xinjiang spruce flora, and Xinjiang Fir constitute the mountainous coniferous forest; betula pendula flora, betula microphylla flora, willow flora, and European aspen flora constitute the mountainous deciduous broad-leaved forest; juniperus communis var. saxatilis flora, Altai saltuaria flora, betula rotundifolia flora, rose flora, spiraea flora, spiraea hypericifolia flora, shrub willow flora, B.humilis schraank flora and other flora constitute the shrub vegetation; alpine meadow , subalpine meadow, middle mountain meadow constitute the meadow vegetation.The plant species exceeded 1400.Among the recorded plants, ferns include 8 genera of 19 species in 7 families; gymnosperms include 4 genera of 9 species in 3 families; among the angiosperms, dicotyledons, which account for 80.84% of the total, include 312 genera of 782 species in 58 families; monocotyledons, which account for 16.25% of the total, include 61 genera of 157 species in 13 families. From the above plant species, 1 species is newly recorded by China. There are 5 new varieties, and 20 endemic species in the Altai Mountain.There are also various fungi species in the Geopark with a total of 69 genera of 143 species, among which 64 genera of 143 species belong to basidiomycota, and 5 genera of 8 species are affiliated with ascomycota. From the above fungi species, 3 fungi species are newly recorded by Xinjaing, and 2 fungi species are newly recorded by China. It is currently known that there are 205 species of lichen and 193 species of bryophyta.
Keketuohai also boasts abundant wildlife resources, with 54 species of beasts in 6 orders and 18 families. From these animal resources, rare animals for First-Grade State Protection are sable, wolverine, snow leopard, ibex, and beaver; rare animals for Second-Grade State Protection are jackal, brown bear, stone marten, otter, felis lybica, lynx, Siberian musk deer, wapiti, argali, and varving hare. And 17 animals are listed into White Book of China's Endangered Animals, mainly including sable, wolverine, snow leopard, wild boar, ibex, beaver, brown bear, stone marten, otter, felis lybica, lynx, Siberian musk deer, argali and others. Amphibians and reptiles are: laudakia stoliczkana, phrynocephalus helioscopus, viviparous lizard, elaphe dione, vipera berus, gloydius intermedius, bufo viridis and so on.Snow leopard is listed as the endangered (EN) grade by the World Conservation Union Red Data Book (IUCN), and snow leopard and brown bear are include into the attachment I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The Geopark is one of the richest districts which boast various bird resources in Xinjiang, and there are about 251 bird species. The bird species belong to 18 orders, 47 genera, and 140 species. The special species include melanitta fusca, diving bird in north pole, boreal owl, himalayan cuckoo, locustella luscinioides, Eurasian reed warbler, perisoreus infaustus and so on. Bird species with relatively special values include: cormorant, black stork, gray goose, whooper swan, tadorna ferruginea, mergus merganser,  kite, otter with brown tail, giant otter, golden eagle, haliaeetus leucoryphus, lammergeier, osprey, circus cyaneus, saker, hazel grouse, quail, grey crane, demoiselle crane, great egret, pterocles orientalis, cuckoo, eagle owl, asio otus, hoopoe, apus pacificus, black woodpecker, red-backed shrike, grey-backed shrike, sturnus, white-throated dipper, nightingale, redstart, fieldfare, penduline titmouse and others.There are 2 orders of 11 species in 7 families of reptiles and amphibious animals in the Geopark. There are 8 kinds of fishes, including Hucho taimen, Brachymystax lenok, Alaska grayling, burbot, Altay minnow, Altai sculpins, Gobio acultipnnatus and Cobitis granoci.
