UNESCO Global Geoparks in China
China is one of the
founding countries of the UNESCO Global Geopark, a major participant in
promoting the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme, and also
the first country in the world where geoparks are established by government
departments. In response to UNESCO's initiative, China started to apply for and
establish UNESCO Global Geoparks. Up to now, it has carried out the
recommendation and application for 11 batches of geoparks and established 41
UNESCO Global Geoparks that cover more than 50,000 square kilometers and are
distributed in 22 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly
under the central government and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. China
has maintained its position as the country with the largest number and most
rapid expansion of geoparks worldwide for many consecutive years. The
establishment of UNESCO Global Geoparks in China has substantially contributed
to the development of ecological civilization and the preservation of local
cultural heritage.
