Relationship between UNESCO Global Geoparks and China's Natural Protected Area System
According to the
Operational Guidelines for UNESCO Global Geopark, after a geopark becomes a
UNESCO Global Geopark, no additional restrictions will be imposed on it and its
economic activities won't be restricted. It just must respect local and
national laws related to the protection of geological heritage. According to
the Guidance on Establishing a Protected Area System Composed Mainly of
National Parks, protected areas are land or sea areas legally designated or
confirmed by governments at all levels for long-term protection of important
natural ecosystems, natural relics, natural landscapes, and their natural
resources, ecological functions, and cultural values. They include national
parks, natural reserves, and various natural parks such as scenic spots, forest
parks, national/provincial-level geoparks, ocean parks, and wetland parks. At
present, the scope of China's UNESCO Global Geoparks overlaps with that of
existing protected areas in whole or in part. Overlapping areas shall be
managed according to the requirements for protected areas. Non-overlapping
areas don't belong to protected areas and their resources such as geoheritage
shall be protected and managed in accordance with the relevant regulations of
UNESCO.
